2016 was eventful to say the least, and as 2017 approaches Ana and that I wanted to sneak in a final trip for the year together with all our daughter. We decided to do a family road trip through Italy.
I have done a ton of travel, but not with a baby in tow so I knew this would be a trip of firsts in several ways — first moment with a baby and all the things that she needs (stroller, diaper bag, snacks, clothing, toys, etc..)

Where We Stayed
In all honesty, travel to Europe is a good deal less expensive than summertime, so it was only a matter of narrowing down exactly where we wanted to proceed. Since I have family living throughout the Umbria area, ” I also do day trips from there, and thought it better to post up in Perugia, the capital of Umbria. In addition we spent the first three nights in Rome and the last two in Florence so we would not miss out on among the best cities full of sightseeing.
Tips to Long Car Rides Having a Baby
We understood that Melina would have to take naps, so maintain her routine eating schedule (breakfast at 8 am, lunch at noon, dinner at 5:45pm, along with snacks in between), hence our itinerary was loosely planned in case we needed to come back to the resort for any reason.

There are Lots of Areas to take a break (and feed the pigeons) in the Roman Forum
With a baby it’s tough to pinpoint exactly when you will leave the home, although we attempted to arrive as early as you can. We finished getting there at 9:30am, an hour after the website opens, that just supposed we waited in line to buy tickets for around 5 minutes. Since we walked from our flat, we had the stroller with us. Here are some handy tips:
Interior of St. Peter’s Basilica
Unlike the Colosseum, Vatican City was a little trickier with a baby.
A tour of the Vatican Museums will require another individual and you to take the stroller up and down flights of stairs. Additionally, strollers are not allowed inside St. Peter’s Basilica (you have to test it in local ). Because carrying our 22-pound baby on a store was not an option for our backs we decided to choose our stroller!
So That We switched to the carrier for a Little after Some Time she got Tired from the stroller
My wife purchased us that a Vatican City tour. We managed to have a time and see the Sistine Chapel, as well at the Pieta sculpture from the Basilica despite having to take the stroller up and down stairs. We chose the baby carrier too. Here are some things to Remember:
Ever since we knew the weather will be cold (50’s during the day and 40’s at night) we needed to pack intelligent. To make things easy, here’s what we took:
Warm and happy in freezing Rome!
With her Fresh Novel about to have a bite from a croissant
Traveling to Italy with a baby meant that we had a kitchen to bathe her own bottles and prepare her dinner, so we decided around Airbnb to book apartments in Perugia and Rome. For Florence we booked a hotel room with a kitchen. We asked baby cots (packn’ plays) before coming to each place.
The Perugia Christmas Marketplace was steps from our front door
If you do not want to walk quite far with a baby in tow, I recommend reserving in the city center, although everyone walks everywhere. Campo di Fiori in Rome is the perfect place — near supermarkets, restaurants, stores, and important sites.
Palazzo Gamba Had Been a walk to the Ponte Vecchio bridge
Our hotel room at Palazzo Gamba in Florence couldn’t have been in a better place. The building that is next over was that the Duomo! Perugia was somewhat more tricky because cars are not allowed in the Old Town, but there’s a mini metro that will take you up to the town from the parking lots.
View over Perugia
A vehicle isn’t necessary in Rome, so before going to Perugia, we rented a vehicle on the AutoEurope site. I enjoy booking on this website as it lets me compare costs from agencies and choose what type of car I need. We did not bring a vehicle seat with us, but it was not a issue. When we booked online, we just added you. You will find car seats for every era and boosters to children. We picked the automobile seat we did a quick install ourselves from the leasing and wanted at the car rental office. Our automobile rides were 1-2 hours shirts, however, Melina did get just a little fussy. Here are a few tips for car rides with baby in Italy:
Getting ready for a day of shopping at the Luxurious outlets
Miami International Airport
First thing’s first. You will need to get your baby his or her very first passport. This can take up to a month, so do this whenever you think you may be traveling. Do your research! Airline and Each airport has different rules concerning infants. As an instance, Miami International enables you to wear your baby on a carrier when however, Florence airport gets you take them in your hands. All strollers will need to have the ability to fit through the X-ray scanners therefore it’s important to pick a collapsible stroller that is lightweight . The UPPAbaby TravelSafe app covers the stroller travel bag. All you have to do is enroll your luggage on the internet prior to departure and any damage resulting from your equipment is completely covered by UPPAbaby!
Most airlines do not need you to obtain a ticket for children under 2 (they ride in your lap), but we ended up buying an excess chair with our miles so that we would have additional space. If the airline provides a baby crib throughout the flight, take advantage! We purchased our daughter some toys that were new and did not give them to her until she began getting on the excursion. There is no better cure for fussiness compared to a small distraction. A singing activity book along with some cubes did the trick! Don’t forget to bring clothes for the baby and plenty of baby food and you.
Baby crib in use Throughout our transatlantic Trip on Air Berlin (had to be requested in advance)
Overall, we had an epic family vacation with our own kid. I was able to reconnect with my cousins and they got to meet with up with the bambina for the very first time after seeing her just in photographs. Yes, there were instances when the baby was and there had been moments of frustration because of jet lag and long days, but I believe she enjoyed seeing things. The excursion was well groomed and relaxed — we did not make many concrete strategies aside from the main sites in also our loved ones days along with Rome. It is highly recommended by me, if you are contemplating travel with a kid! Italy is really a destination with plenty to see, eat and do! It’s a nation that is secure Italians are fond of infants. Our impression was that everyone was patient and comprehension of our situation at restaurants and stores. Seats are readily available at most restaurants, because are type individuals to open doors.
Happy baby = happy parents!
